Today Meta is launching Facebook Verified. It’s a free badge that lets you know there’s a real person behind an account. To get the badge you have to go through a selfie-based verification process. You basically record a selfie video, which the company will check against your existing profile pictures to confirm a match. This process should only take a few minutes.
If you get a badge, it will initially appear in Facebook Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and on your profile. In future it can also be seen in feed posts. Obviously, the badge doesn’t mean that Facebook “endorses the user or guarantees their credibility,” just that there’s a real person behind the account.
Facebook Verified is available to eligible users over the age of 18 who are in good standing with the platform’s community standards, specifically those prohibiting fraud, scams, and deceptive practices, and who show no evidence of “inauthentic behavior”. This feature is not available for Pages or Promo accounts.
The rollout is happening in phases, starting with unnamed “select markets” and eventually expanding globally.
