Samsung led the smartphone market in Q3 | Infinium-tech
A new report from Omdia has come out today and it has declared Samsung the winner of the smartphone sales game in the third quarter (July to September). The Korean company shipped 60.6 million devices for a 19% market share, up 6% compared to Q3 2024.
Apple ranked second with 56.5 million shipments and 18% of the pie, growing 4% from the year-ago quarter. Xiaomi ranked third with 43.4 million shipments, 14% market share and year-on-year (YoY) growth of 1%. Transsion (owner of Infinix, iTel, and Tecno) ranks fourth with 28.6 million shipments, 9% market share, and 12% largest year-on-year growth in the top five. Vivo ranked fifth with 28.5 million shipments and 9% market share, up 5% from Q3 2024 numbers.

Samsung’s growth was driven by the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Flip7 as well as the A07 and A17. Apple’s base iPhone 17 “beaten launch expectations due to better value proposition”. Xiaomi shipments in China declined after state subsidy programs ended, but were offset by growth in Asia-Pacific and other regions. Vivo remained strong in India, overtook Huawei in China and continued growing in Asia-Pacific, Africa and Latin America.

The overall market shipped 320.1 million units in Q3, an increase of 3% year-over-year. Shipments to North America and Greater China declined year-on-year, while Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa posted strong growth. In Africa, shipments increased by 25%, and in Asia-Pacific by 5%.

Interestingly, Omdia says the overall growth is driven by devices priced below $100 and above $700, while the mid-range remains weak. In the near future, higher prices for new devices are expected, and this will hinder the growth of the low-end segment.
