Google’s Pixel Watch 3 is basically disposable | Infinium-tech

When you think of the concept of a disposable watch, images of Google’s recently unveiled Pixel Watch 3 probably don’t immediately spring to mind, but for all intents and purposes, that’s exactly what it is – a disposable product, good as long as it lasts, and can be discarded if anything goes wrong.

Google has today confirmed that the Pixel Watch 3, like both of its predecessor models, is not repairable. So if your device has a problem, no matter what it is, the device will not be repaired. Instead, you will be given a replacement Pixel Watch 3.

With all the talk about how recyclable the new Pixel smartphone box is, or how smartphone manufacturers are saving the planet many times over by charging you extra for the charger (and shipping it separately in even more packaging), it seems an interesting omission not to consider just how harmful a “no repairs” policy on this kind of electronic device is to the environment.

It’s unclear what will happen to the broken watches. We’re still hoping they won’t immediately end up in a landfill, but rather they’ll be broken down and most of their insides recycled. But that’s just our wishful thinking, as Google hasn’t clarified.

Google’s solution to this whole issue is ‘Preferred Care’, an insurance program available in the US that covers accidental damage and out-of-warranty issues to your Pixel Watch 3 for a $49 service fee.
