Apple to build AI extension system for third-party models in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 | Infinium-tech
Apple is unveiling iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8. A new report from bloomberg Today claims that all these versions of the company’s operating system will support AI extensions.
The report claims that these extensions “allow you to access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand through Apple Intelligence features like Siri, writing tools, Image Playground, and more”.

So basically, you will be able to use built-in Apple-made tools or tap on third-party options. The extensions will work for creating and editing text and images as well as conversations.
Speaking of which, each AI model you use can have a different voice, so you’ll know “who” is talking to you at all times. The built-in Siri models will use one voice, and third-party models will use another (or each their own, it’s not clear how far the customization actually goes).
We recognize that third-party AI services will need to update their apps to support this expansion system, but we have no doubt that they will take advantage of the opportunity. Once supported, you’ll be able to select ChatGPT for the cloud for help with typing, Gemini for drawing, and Chat with Siri.
This is an interesting approach and shows that Apple has completely given up on building its own AI platform that competes with ChatGPIT, Gemini, and Cloud. Instead, it is embracing competition with moves like this.
