Weekly poll results: most people still don’t care about magnetic charging | Infinium-tech

Last week we asked you how important magnetic wireless charging is to you. For now, the majority don’t particularly care – at most it’s a “nice feature” for them but nothing critical.

The logic is simple, especially now that the whole world has converged on USB-C for charging – just use a cable. It’s faster and more efficient than any other type of wireless charging.

There is one caveat – those who reported they only use wired charging also said they did not need to top-up during the day. These days, phone batteries have become quite large, so finding a phone that can last a whole day even with heavy use isn’t that hard.

And that’s another thing – the universal wired charging standard (USB-PD) is much faster than the universal wireless charging standard (Qi2 tops out at 25W). Those big batteries require fast charging. Yes, proprietary wireless charging solutions run over 25W, but they can be a headache if you decide to change brands.

About a third of voters want Magnet, but they are divided into several camps. First up in the debate of the matter is built-in magnets vs. magnets. For users who want to go caseless, built-in magnets are essential. For those who were going to use a case anyway, this is less important. Some people are concerned that case-only magnets are weaker than a stack of phone+case magnets.

The second split is – as we mentioned in last week’s survey article, magnets have additional uses beyond charging. 1 in 10 voters are only interested in use cases of magnetic mounts and accessories. They still prefer to charge using cables.

MagSafe-style chargers, mounts, etc. have their place going forward, even if they aren’t universally beloved. However, it has seen little adoption outside Apple – Google was the first to move to Android with Pixelsnap. Other Android manufacturers have been quite reluctant to follow suit.
