The FCC wants carriers to put more effort into preventing spam calls – or get punished | Infinium-tech
In 2016, Google updated Android’s Phone app to warn users about spam calls. We’ve seen various iterations of this and other similar features, but the problem still persists. Now the FCC wants to attack the root of the issue by strengthening existing “know-your-customer” (KYC) rules.
The FCC is seeking comments on more rigorous verification for new and renewing customers. This may include requiring that customers provide their name, address, a government ID, and an alternative phone number.
Additionally, the Commission is looking for feedback on how to penalize carriers that violate KYC rules based on the number of illegal calls they make. The goal is “to ensure that fines are commensurate with the harm caused to callers.”
Google is using AI to fight spam calls
The FCC already requires carriers to know their customers and remove any customers using their networks for spam calls or other illegal activities. However, the carriers are neglecting their duties.
Blocking spammers from getting phone lines is only part of the overall solution – the FCC wants carriers to block any spam calls they detect. Also, he wants carriers to give people more information about who is calling them so people can better protect themselves. This is done with features like STIR/SHAKEN.
