AMD announces the new Ryzen 7 9850X3D gaming CPU | Infinium-tech
AMD announced the Ryzen 7 9850X3D today at CES 2026. It’s a higher binned version of the company’s popular 9800X3D gaming CPU, and can hit higher clock speeds. This part has been rumored a lot over the past several weeks and has appeared in several leaks, including leaks from Dell and AMD.

The Ryzen 7 9850X3D has the same 8-core, 16-thread design as the 9800X3D, as well as the same 96MB L3 cache that makes these chips particularly well-suited for gaming workloads. Thanks to higher levels of binning, the 9850X3D can now achieve 5.6GHz clock speeds, up from 5.2GHz on the 9800X3D at the same 120W TDP.

That’s about an 8% increase in clock speed, and should make the 9850X3D the fastest gaming CPU in AMD’s lineup and, as a result, on the market. Technically, the company’s 16-core 9950X3D can reach 5.7GHz, but it does so on a CCD that doesn’t have additional L3 cache, while the 3D V-cache CCD hovers around 5.5GHz. As a result, the new 9850X3D should be able to match or exceed the 9950X3D in frequency-constrained scenarios.

As for what kind of benefits you can expect from this chip, the answer is ‘not much’. AMD’s own figures show an improvement in gaming performance of between 3-6% depending on the title. As far as productivity performance is concerned, the answer is around 5%. There may be more headroom to explore with overclocking, given that this is a higher binned part, but still one shouldn’t expect miracles.

AMD has not yet announced pricing for the 9850X3D, and it remains to be seen how it compares to the $480 9800X3D. Considering the existence of the $600 9900X3D and $700 9950X3D, the 9850X3D will likely be priced within the $500-$600 ballpark, as anything higher than that wouldn’t make sense, even within AMD’s own lineup. The company has also said that the 9800X3D will not be discontinued and should remain at the current price.
