Apple can be quite disappointing – at first glance, the iPhone 17e barely appears to be an upgrade. But the more you look at its spec sheet, the more you start thinking “this might actually be worth it.” Do you agree?

First, let’s look at the upgrades – this will be brief. The new phone features the Apple A19 chipset, which technically brings a ton of performance to the mid-ranger. It also uses the advanced Apple C1X modem, which is twice as fast as the 16e’s C1.

The display is the same 6.1″ OLED panel that still runs at 60Hz and still has that chunky notch at the top. However, it’s now protected by the stronger Ceramic Shield 2 (3x better scratch resistance) and has an anti-reflective coating.

The battery capacity is the same, 4,005mAh, and wired charging is the same (50% in 30 minutes). But wireless charging is now twice as fast at 15W (yes, the 16e only supports 7.5W wireless charging). More importantly, it’s proper MagSafe charging, so the 17e has full access to the ecosystem of magnetic chargers and mounts – with or without a case.

And let’s not forget – the iPhone 17e now has 256GB of base storage. Sure, you could get a 256GB 16e, but that was a $100 upgrade. All Pixel 10 phones except the Pro XL and Pro Fold start with 128GB of storage. And until a week ago, the same was true of the base Galaxy S. The 256GB base storage is a bigger deal than it first appears.

Look? It seems like the 17e brings minimal upgrades and still looks a lot worse than the 16e. There’s a long list of upgrades we wanted for the 17e (larger sensor, second camera, 120Hz display, Dynamic Island, etc.), but as the most affordable new iPhone, it’s sure to have its fans.
