Weekly poll: are you getting an iPhone 16? Which one? | Infinium-tech
This week marks the annual iPhone launch. Announced on Monday, pre-orders began on Friday, shipments and open sale begin next Friday. Will you be among those upgrading to the iPhone 16?
Let’s start with an overview. The 16-series has the more powerful Apple A18 and A18 Pro chipsets that can run AI, Apple Intelligence in particular. However, this won’t arrive for at least a month and, if you’re in the EU or China, it could take longer.
Key features of Apple iPhone 16
The other big change in this generation is the Action Button, a configurable shortcut button that replaces the Alert Slider and Camera Control. The last one is a multi-function capacitive touchpad. Both will be adopted by third-party apps and companies, such as unlocking your Ford with the Action Button or adjusting share settings in Snapchat with the Camera Control.
There are improvements to the camera, but they’re relatively minor. The Pro model has a new 48MP ultra-wide camera, but the telephoto module still uses a 12MP sensor. At least the smaller Pro now matches the larger Pro Max with a 5x periscope (up from 15x zoom on the 3x Pro).
“Smaller” and “larger” are relative. The two Pro models now have 6.3″ and 6.9″ displays, while the two vanilla models remain at the old sizes of 6.1″ and 6.7″. Another thing worth noting is that the 16-series phones have higher charge rates – 45W peak over USB-C and up to 25W with MagSafe.
Both vanilla phones now have more RAM (needed for AI) and new cameras too – it’s just autofocus and a macro mode for the ultra wide (still at 12MP), no telephoto lens. Apple has added spatial video and photo modes so you can create content for the Vision Pro, but who’s going to spend money on a $3,500 VR headset over their smartphone? Oh, well, there’s also spatial capture if you want it.
We would be remiss if we didn’t include pricing details. In short, these are the same prices as last year (except that the 16 Pro model is cheaper than last year’s 15 Pro in India).

OK, let’s go to the poll. First up is the Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max. Now measuring 77.6mm wide and weighing 227g (compared to the 15 Pro Max’s 76.7mm and 221g), has the bigger iPhone gotten too big? Or is the extra screen real estate a bonus?
Next up, there’s the Apple iPhone 16 Pro. Its predecessor was one of the best small flagships of 2023 — not that it had much competition — but now Apple says the Pro should be bigger than its vanilla counterparts. What do you think?
The Apple iPhone 16 Plus (like its smaller sibling) is still stuck on a 60Hz display. Only Apple can avoid this – or not?
Finally, the Apple iPhone 16 is the cheapest iPhone with an OLED display. We specify this to exclude the older SE – we’ve heard the new SE will also have an OLED display. So, if you just want a smaller, cheaper iPhone, is the 16 worth it, or should you wait to see how the new SE is?
