But, we see you scratching your head through the screen, wondering how and why cinnamon becomes. Why nothing with “W” to follow Android 16 “Baklava”? Wait, Android 16 “Baklava”? This really makes sense. You can go to the source link for more depth clarification, but here is its essence. Google switched to Android development for a new “trunk stable” model from the old branch-based model recently. Instead of bringing back the new release branches back to stabilizing as before, the new model is constantly ideally stable single main code branch with all new features, fixes and APIs, developed behind the “feature flags”, until they are ready.
Are you still with us? Good. The important bit here is that Google completed the migration in the new trunk-based Dev model with Android 14 QPR2, and to mark the change, the build ID scheme was resetted, so Android 14 QPR2 build ID became AP1A and QPR3 got the build ID AP2A. For the first time Google released a trunk stable build in 2024, so the use of the letter “A” to propose the build ID. However, by that time, Android 14 already had its “reverse cake” name and the “Vanilla Ice Cream” monicor of Android 15, so it was too late to “restart” the names and to make some calls with “A” to Android 15. Once when it turned in the year 2025, however, the build ID started coming up with the letter “B” and Google decided to call Android 16: “Baklava”. The next letter for the build ID is “C” and so enter a dessert – “cinnamon bun” with “C”, possibly “cupcakes” was already taken.
Of course, eventually, the name of the dessert doesn’t really matter so much, especially since Google decided to move away from it as public branding. Nowadays, it is a relic on the development side of things. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see what the Google team now has sweets, now it is essentially the second time for each letter. For Android 17, we hope that it will land around June 2026.
