The Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max’s rear screen wasn’t just a fad, it’s here to stay | Infinium-tech
Last month, Xiaomi launched the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max in China, and both Pro models have a screen on the back, embedded in a giant iPhone-like camera island.
We’ve seen exclusively Xiaomi rear screens before, and they didn’t last very long. So with that in mind, you might have considered this latest iteration to be just another fad/gimmick that will be forgotten until the Xiaomi 18 series arrives. But you would be wrong.

Xiaomi President Lu Weibing has confirmed the fact that the Xiaomi 18 Pro and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max will also have rear screens, and instead of backing away from this venture, the company is actually increasing its R&D investment to make it even more useful by adding complementary software features.
Xiaomi has apparently already spent CNY 1 billion on R&D for the 2.1-inch LTPO AMOLED screens on the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, and this reportedly helped Xiaomi set a new sales record in the first 5 minutes of availability, then reach 1 million shipments in record time.
Overall sales of the Xiaomi 17 series increased by 20% compared to the previous generation, and the Pro series saw three times the sales of the 15 Pro. One of the new features coming soon to the rear screen is real-time translation, which will come with an update later this month. Xiaomi aims to add new features every month.
