Teardown video shows Nio Phone 2’s premium and not so premium components | Infinium-tech
Nio launches its second smartphone 2024 Innovation Daywhoever brought New car OS And the industry’s first 5nm smart driving chip. How do car manufacturers make smartphones? Just like smartphone manufacturers do, more or less. WekiHome has a detailed disassembly video that gives a look inside the phone.
The Neo Phone 2 upgrades the original design with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (up from the Gen 2). The disassembly process begins as usual by removing the SIM card tray. There is a rubber ring to keep water out (the phone is IP68 rated and claims to be able to survive a dive of up to 2 metres underwater for up to 30 minutes). The back panel is made of glass, but there are metal inserts for the rings around the cameras. These can also be protected against water.
Underneath that is a flap that houses the NFC antenna and wireless charging coil. The Phone 2 also has UWB — both UWB and NFC can be used for regular smartphone things, but they also allow the phone to be used as a key for compatible cars. Neo Cars Of course, both of these are compatible, as the company was one of the first to adopt UWB late last year.
Anyway, other interesting finds include SK hynix RAM (LPDDR5X) and Samsung storage (UFS 4.0), as well as a new vapor chamber to keep the Snapdragon snappy. However, WekiHome found some less premium details – for example, the Nio Phone 2 has only two microphones, while most flagships usually have three (or even four). Also, the fingerprint reader is an optical unit that peeks through the OLED display. Proximity and front ambient light sensors are also under the display, both on a small daughterboard.
