Samsung wins court case against TCL in Germany over “fake quantum dot” TVs | Infinium-tech
Germany is the ground for another legal battle between the tech giants – Samsung Electronics recently won a case against TCL over “counterfeit QLED” TVs.
Quantum dots are used in some display types for improved efficiency and color accuracy. For example, some Samsung TVs use ultraviolet backlight. Ultraviolet LEDs are very efficient, but not even in the UV visible spectrum. Quantum dots absorb this UV light and output visible light in the desired color. An additional benefit of this approach is that quantum dots are much easier to tune to the exact wavelength of light than a normal LED.
Samsung was able to demonstrate that some TCL TVs do not use quantum dot technology despite their advertising suggesting otherwise. TCL was not able to refute this before the Munich I Regional Court.
Six different series of TVs are affected – the court ordered TCL to stop promoting those TVs as “QLED” and to correct misrepresentations about them. However, note that this decision is not yet legally binding and TCL may appeal.
However, it is not just Germany, Samsung also has similar cases against TCL in the US and Korea. The outcome of the case in Germany could also affect these other cases.
