Samsung struggles with Exynos 2500 production, all Galaxy S25 units could switch to Snapdragon | Infinium-tech
Samsung was expected to launch the Galaxy S25 series in January 2025 with Exynos chips for vanilla and Plus phones and Snapdragon for Ultra.
Reports from Korea have revealed that this may not be the case, and the company may have to use Snapdragon chips across the entire portfolio. This is because Samsung is facing low yields of Exynos 2500 chips and may be unable to manufacture enough units in time for launch.
According to Business Korea, the 3nm process at the Samsung foundry has a “low yield”, but failed to disclose the exact number. In the chip industry, the yield is never 100% because the rectangular chip is cut from a circular wafer, and there is always some waste. More importantly, not all chips pass quality certification, which is why it varies from production line to production line.
If the report is correct and Samsung indeed goes for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 (which is also expected to arrive as the Snapdragon 8 Elite), it will be another hit for the semiconductor business. The Korean company had already lost orders from Nvidia and Apple after these companies turned to TSMC for their AI-enabled chips.
