While the Samsung Galaxy S26 is not getting new camera hardware, the Galaxy S27 series may come with a major upgrade. A new report from South Korea reveals that Samsung is reportedly working on a brand new smartphone camera sensor with global shutter capabilities, which could come with its next-generation flagship smartphones. The report doesn’t specify the exact device, but it looks like it will be present on the Galaxy S27 series.

Global shutter sensors differ from the more common rolling shutter, as they capture all pixels simultaneously without distortion or distortion. This makes the global shutter sensor much better at capturing moving subjects than the rolling shutter. You’ll commonly find global shutter sensors on professional cameras used to capture sporting events or in industrial applications like conveyor belts for quality inspection and machine vision.

Samsung’s global shutter sensor is reportedly getting 1.5 micrometer sized pixels in a 2×2 formation and 12MP resolution. The 12MP resolution suggests that the sensor will be implemented on either a telephoto or ultrawide lens. The new report also suggests that Samsung’s global shutter sensor will feature an embedded analog-to-digital converter (ADC) for its pixels, allowing for faster image capture.

Samsung isn’t the only brand working on integrating a global shutter sensor, as Apple is also reportedly pushing to bring the technology to its next-generation iPhones.
