Meta has reportedly stopped working on its Apple Vision Pro competitor, codenamed La Jolla. Development on it began in November last year, and it was supposed to arrive sometime in 2027.

That’s not happening now. The reason for the project being canceled is apparently that the headset was using a MicroOLED display, which made it too expensive, far beyond Meta’s initial goal of keeping its price under $1,000.

The $3,500 Apple Vision Pro hasn’t been a huge success either, and if Apple can’t even make a higher-priced device a best-seller, it could be a sign that there’s not enough room in the market for such a high-end headset to house two competing headsets.

Referring to the news of the cancellation of the La Jolla headset, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said Said“We have a number of prototypes in development at all times. But we don’t bring them all into production. We go ahead with some, drop others. Such decisions happen all the time, and stories based on discussions about an individual decision never paint the real picture”.

Even though the high-end headset has been canceled, Meta is still working on a more affordable Quest, codenamed Ventura, which could arrive before the end of this year. Meta is also expected to showcase new AR glasses next month, while the Quest 4 should arrive in 2026.
