Google Wallet will soon allow adding US passports but don’t get too excited | Infinium-tech
Google Wallet will allow citizens of the United States to create a new type of digital ID in the app based on their passport, which is typically used for international travel. This will be a great feature for users who are waiting for their state to add support for in-person digital IDs, although it will have limited functions.
The passport option can be used at select TSA checkpoints (Google is still working on the full list). Travelers will still need to bring their physical documents, such as a driver’s license, for border checks.
Google will ensure that all the data in the new digital ID matches the data in the passport. It will label the new pass type “Verified with Google Wallet”.
Google gave an example saying that the ID can also be used for age verification at bars. In this scenario, the user will only be able to share his date of birth and no other details (such as address, name, serial number, etc.).
This facility will be available to all people across America who have a passport, irrespective of the state and availability of digital ID there.
