Google launches Gemini Live on Android, a “mobile conversational experience” | Infinium-tech
At its hardware launch event today, Google also unveiled some cool stuff related to AI. First up, Gemini Live. It’s rolling out in English on Android phones for Gemini Advanced subscribers starting today.
According to Google, it “delivers a mobile conversation experience that lets you have a more open conversation with Gemini.” So, it’s basically like Google Assistant, but branded AI because that’s what everything should be these days?
You can pause a conversation in the middle of Gemini Live to talk about something in depth, or pause a conversation and come back to it later, so it’s better. Gemini Live also works hands-free – you can continue talking with the Gemini app in the background or when your phone is locked. Gemini Live will have ten new voices to choose from, as shown in the video above.
“In the coming weeks”, Google is rolling out new extensions for Gemini. These will enable it to work with apps like Keep, Tasks and Utilities, and expand its feature set on YouTube Music. Then there’s a calendar extension coming “soon” that will, for example, allow you to take a photo of a concert flyer and ask Gemini if you’re free that day, and even set a reminder to buy tickets. Actually buying tickets is probably a feature for 2025 and beyond.
On Android, if you’re using Gemini instead of Google Assistant, you can ask Gemini something by saying “Hey Google.” And if you’re using YouTube, you can tap Ask about this video and ask Gemini a question about what you’re watching. This works anywhere else on the Ask about this screen. Gemini can also drag and drop the images it generates directly into Gmail and Google Messages.
Google promises to focus on speed and quality with Gemini in the coming months, and introduce deeper integration with Google Home, Phone, and Messages.
