Google is reportedly working on its own version of Apple’s NameDrop | Infinium-tech
In 2023, Apple introduced Namedrop as part of iOS 17. This feature lets you share files with another person by bringing your iPhone closer to them. NameDrop also supports sharing contact information.
Now, more than two years later, Google is working on a similar feature for Android. It was discovered in a version of Google Play Services called “Gesture Exchange”.
Gesture Exchange also includes an activity called Contact Exchange, and it uses NFC. And above you can see what Google’s NameDrop for Android will look like. The screenshot on the left shows the first screen you will see when starting the functionality. This is where you choose what details you want to share – photo, phone number, email address. You can also select Receive Only to not share any information.
The screenshot on the right shows the received information, which you can save with a single tap. You can start a video call or send a text using the buttons directly there.
While NFC is certainly being used for this, it may just be for the initial handshake to establish a connection between two phones. And for now the development is clearly contact sharing-oriented, but there’s certainly nothing stopping Google from adding file sharing capabilities later.
The company can also choose a better sounding name for this feature than Gesture Exchange/Contact Exchange. We will have to wait and see. It appears that development is ongoing, but it may still be some time before it goes live.
