Apple might be working on a special iPhone case that enhances satellite connectivity | Infinium-tech
In 2024, Apple filed a patent application for an “electronic device and case with satellite communications capabilities”, and this has just been revealed. Basically, it is a case that comes with more and better antennas that can enhance satellite connectivity.
Apparently this case will be made for iPhones as well as iPads. As you can see in the picture below, the case will have a part that opens to point the internal phased antenna array towards the sky to get better satellite signals. This will also ensure that touching the phone won’t block the satellite signal, since you’re not touching the actual flip side, which houses the antennas.

With such an antenna array, Case would be able to connect to a whole constellation of satellites. This case will function like a normal case, installable and removable by the user. In its patent application, Apple speculates that it could “send wireless data over a radio-frequency connector with a removable case”, or various other options such as NFC.
The thing to remember about these types of patent filings is that companies like Apple routinely make them for a ton of products that never actually see the light of day. They are more ‘proof of concept’ and less ‘actual development product’. They could lead to the latter, but most don’t, so although it sounds interesting, we’re not sure if Apple would ever launch something like this.
