Apple and Meta’s regulatory woes in the EU are almost over, new report claims | Infinium-tech
Apple and Meta’s regulatory troubles in the EU are almost over, according to a new report today. Both companies are reportedly close to settling their antitrust cases with the European Commission (EC), which will certainly be good for them as they will avoid some additional heavy fines that the EC might otherwise impose.
This information is not yet official, the report states that it comes from “information from discussions held by officials” between the EC on the one hand, and Apple and Meta, respectively, on the other.
This is what unnamed European officials have said financial Times There is now “growing optimism” to find “a workable solution” when it comes to Meta’s ‘pay or consent’ model, where Facebook and Instagram owners force users to either consent to their very extensive data tracking or pay a monthly subscription to get rid of it. Meta has already been fined €200 million for this.
The most sensitive remaining issue when it comes to META is to ensure that consumers can easily find and navigate all the different options offered in the EU.
Apple, on the other hand, had already announced changes to its anti-infringing App Store policies in June. The EC is now discussing other possible changes with Apple in connection with the new investigation into Apple’s contract terms with developers.
At the moment, the EC has not taken any final decision on the problems faced by either company, but “people briefed on the negotiations” are apparently “hopeful that the matters will be resolved soon”. If this happens, both Apple and Meta will avoid daily penalties, which could increase up to 5% of their average daily revenue worldwide.
