Wear OS 5.1 could be based on Android 15 and coming soon | Infinium-tech
If you like following software versions, you might know that Wear OS isn’t the easiest to keep track of. It has a different versioning system than Android, even though it’s based on Android code. And new Wear OS versions typically arrive at least a few months after the release of the Android version they’re based on.
This can be confusing but at least we’ve consistently seen major new Android versions being integrated into major new Wear OS versions. However, it looks like that’s about to change, as apparently Wear OS 5.1 will be released, and it will be based on Android 15, even if Wear OS 5.0 was based on Android 14.
An “insider” has reportedly provided this information, stating that Wear OS 5.1 is currently in testing internally at Google on the Pixel Watch 2. Note that while it’s currently being referred to as Wear OS 5.1, there’s always the possibility that Google names it Wear OS 6 before release.
If not, Wear OS 5.1 being based on a different Android version than Wear OS 5 means that Google has finally completely decoupled the underlying Android version from the Wear OS version. This will make it difficult to know in the future whether one Wear OS version uses a newer Android version than another.
