Tata factory making iPhone backplates in India won’t be shut down due to pollution | Infinium-tech
No factory supplying iPhone parts will be closed in India. The plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, was under investigation by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) since December 2025 after farmers near the facility complained of their land and wells being contaminated by the factory’s waste water. TNPCB threatened forced closure of the facility.
The factory is owned by Indian conglomerate Tata and makes iPhone backplates. Given Apple’s recent drive to reduce its dependence on Chinese manufacturing, a quarter of iPhones sold worldwide are now made in India, as well as a growing parts supply ecosystem. This plant is a part of that.

Tata says it has resolved all contamination concerns and the Tamil Nadu factory is no longer under investigation by the TNPCB. Tata was reportedly made aware of the pollution on December 23 last year. Now, it says it conducted an independent sample analysis, which showed that it was in full compliance with the rules, with all parameters within the prescribed limits.
