This is the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL, the successor to the Google Pixel 8 Pro, which was the largest member of the 8 series. There’s also a smaller Pro this year, but that’s coming to the market in September. So let’s unbox it.

This year’s Pixels come in a recycled paper box with a sleeve built in. There’s a USB-C cable in the box and that’s it.

We also have the official Pixel 9 case for €40, which is available in six colors. It fits the phone perfectly, especially around the camera bar. It’s not too intrusive on the front. It’s a soft silicone, but it doesn’t dig into your pocket when you take the phone out, as some cheaper cases do.

Google has opted for a flat theme for the Pixel 9 phones – flat glass front and back and flat sides. The frame is polished metal which catches fingerprints in no time but looks posh and premium.

We have the porcelain Pixel 9 Pro XL, which is a slightly muddy white color.

Here’s the Pixel 9 Pro XL next to the regular Pixel 9. This is also the size difference between the Pixel 9 Pro XL and the new, smaller Pixel 9 Pro, as it has exactly the same dimensions as the vanilla 9.

But no matter how they look in the pictures, neither of these phones actually feel small. And at just 2 grams less than the Pixel 9’s 200 grams and just 2 grams less than the Pixel 9 Pro XL’s 221 grams, neither phone feels light. They both feel sturdy and well-built, just not lightweight!

The Pixel 9 Pro XL has a faster Tensor G4 chipset and now comes with 16GB of RAM. It also has a slightly larger display (0.1″). The camera system is the same as last year’s Pixel 8 Pro – but the ultrawide angle camera has a much brighter lens, and the selfie shooter looks to be a big upgrade at 42MP.
