The Nintendo Switch tops the DS to become the company’s best-selling console of all time | Infinium-tech
While the Nintendo Switch 2 goes on sale in mid-2025, some people are still buying the original – giving it enough of a boost to become Nintendo’s best-selling console ever.
Nintendo Switch sales now stand at 155.37 million units, moving it behind the former king, Nintendo DS, which has sold 154.02 million units. In third place is a classic, the Nintendo Game Boy (although note that the company lumps several variants into one entry, for example the Game Boy Color).
As for the Switch 2, which debuted with 6 million units sold in under a month and is now at a total of 17.37 million units — it still has a long way to go until it catches up with its predecessor.

Nintendo also lists the number of games sold – in this category, the original Switch is an absolute beast with 1,500.16 million games sold. For comparison, the DS sold an impressive 948.76 million games and in third place, surprisingly, is the Nintendo Wii with 921.85 million games sold. We say this “surprisingly” because Nintendo sold 101.63 million Wiis, which is less than the Game Boy. However, the Game Boy could only manage 501.11 million games (which is still pretty impressive, mind you).
Anyway, while the Switch is the best-selling Nintendo console of all time, it’s not the overall winner – that title is held by the Sony PlayStation 2, which sold 160 million units during its ridiculously long lifespan (it debuted in 2000 and was only discontinued in 2013). PS2 also leads with sales of 1.54 billion games.
