Google has inadvertently deleted some people’s Maps Timelines | Infinium-tech
The timeline feature of Google Maps (known as the first place history) is extremely scary and gross for some people, and is incredibly useful for others as it allows you to go back on time and see it where you went on any specific day at any specific time, where you had your Android phone with you.
Google is creating a big overhaul of how the timeline works, which should hit all users within the next few months (infections started in December). The timeline will only be stored on each device, if you choose it, it will no longer be available from Google’s server. This is a boon for privacy, of course, but during the transition, Google made a huge boost.
That is, it unknowingly removed some of the timely data data, and it became good until they chose in the encrypted cloud backup of the said data. Unfortunately, it seems highly laudable that only a very small minority of users has done so, and so for those who do not see their timeline data, there is no solution right now – it will be lost forever.
According to a Google spokesperson, this was the result of a technical problem and not user error or deliberate change. This is not much comfort for those who have lost their deadline forever, of course. Good news, if we can call it, it is that Google realizes who was really impressed by this, and sent emails to those who explain its error – so if you have not received the same email in the screenshot above, you are safe.
