Google finally allows third-party billing on Google Play in the UK | Infinium-tech
Google announced that it is eventually allowing developers to select the billing system they want to use in apps distributed on Google Play. The change affects the UK consumers, but has also been implemented in other markets.
For now, the new billing option is available only to non-game developers and will be launched on 29 March. Developers who choose can offer a separate billing method to their users, but cannot completely change the billing system of Google Play.
However, if users decide to use an alternative billing system, developers will avoid 30% fee on transactions, which collect Google.
But don’t think for a second that it is voluntary. In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched an investigation against Google and Apple in 2022, which found that both technical giants could be attached to antitrust behavior, which can limit the choice of users and developers, which are not allowing third party billing methods.
Google agreed to offer its billing system option, so the investigation stopped. So we are finally happening this.
