Qualcomm is off the hook for now, wins its licensing dispute with ARM | Infinium-tech
The US federal court sided with Qualcomm in its lawsuit against ARM, saying that the licensing agreement between the two companies was not violated, although there are still uncertainties over the situation. But at least for now, Qualcomm is off the hook.
The two companies came into conflict after Qualcomm acquired startup Nuvia, which also uses ARM’s architecture. According to ARM, Qualcomm should pay higher royalty fees because Nuvia is owned by Qualcomm, and they both use ARM’s patents for chip designs.
Even though the judge ruled in Qualcomm’s favor, he said it was not a clear victory because the jury failed to reach a unanimous decision on whether Nuvia violated its licensing agreement with ARM. This leaves open the possibility of ARM pursuing another case in the future.
