HMD is bringing AI, video calling and a digital wallet to its feature phones | Infinium-tech
Among the myriad of announcements at MWC 2026, HMD announced its plans to bring modern smartphone features to its feature phone lineup in the coming months. HMD seeks to expand digital access to less-connected users around the world through a set of features and services including digital wallets, AI assistants and video calling. These services are scheduled to launch by 2026, with key markets such as India as the starting point.
HMD’s digital wallet will provide secure remittance for receiving, storing and withdrawing cash through local payment systems. The service is scheduled to launch in India in the first half of this year and will be launched more widely later. HMD is claiming device-level security with PIN protection and has revealed that its digital wallet has been developed with fintech firm Kivi3 and blockchain company Polygon Labs.

AI is making its way into almost every device form factor, and HMD is looking to integrate it into its upcoming feature phones. HMD has partnered with India’s Sarvam AI to develop a dedicated AI assistant that will allow users to perform certain tasks through their voice. These include basic functions like making a call, setting an alarm, and turning on the phone’s flashlight, but the HMD will also offer an AI chat experience for simple questions.
Apart from its AI assistant, HMD is also bringing a pilot project for an AI companion for elderly users. The service, which has been co-developed with InTouch, will provide tailored support for elderly users and is expected to begin testing in Europe first, followed by a global rollout.
HMD is also bringing video calling and better messaging experience through its new Express Chat app. The app will allow video conferencing through the front-facing camera and will also support voice messaging, group chat, and photo sharing.
