Gmail might soon offer temporary email addresses | Infinium-tech
You probably already know how a temporary email address works. There are many services that offer such inboxes online. Most even do it absolutely free. Honestly, it’s surprising that none of the major tech players have offered this service until now.
Well, that may soon change. The good folks at Android Authority spotted some references to something called “Shield Email” in the latest Gmail Android app. The concept is simple – Google gives you a temporary email address to give to a third party instead of your real email. Then, as soon as you receive an email at your temporary address, it is sent to your regular email inbox. If, at any point, you decide you no longer want to receive emails on your temporary email, you can simply get rid of it instead of dealing with spam filters and the like.
Protected email mentioned in UI element
We believe that, like most existing temporary email services, Google will only allow incoming email to come into temporary email, not outgoing mail, as this would open the door to more nefarious and annoying uses of the service.
Additionally, according to a screenshot of Autofill with Google, which Android Authority also exposed, you may be able to receive more than one “shielded email” at a time. This will make things even more versatile. For now, the “Shielded Email” feature is just a conceptual thing seen in some text references and UI and not something officially discussed by Google in any capacity. So, it could happen, but it just as likely could come to an end. We’ll be sure to keep an eye on any developments.
