Apple now said to be talking to Tencent and TikTok owner ByteDance for AI features in China | Infinium-tech
Apple is reportedly in talks with Tencent and TikTok owner ByteDance to partner on AI features in China. The talks are reportedly at a very early stage, so there are still chances that nothing will come of it.
Apple needs a Chinese partner for AI features because the Chinese government has to approve any generative AI services, and it apparently heavily favors local companies for such permits.
Apple has started rolling out ChatGPT in Apple Intelligence, but ChatGPT is not available in China for the reason mentioned above.
Of course, any Chinese company that succeeds in partnering with Apple to deploy AI services will immediately become a major winner in the country’s extremely crowded AI field.
Apple was previously in talks with Baidu, but according to a recent rumor the discussions “faced setbacks due to technical issues, including a dispute over using iPhone user data to train AI models”.
The absence of any AI features on iPhones in China has become a major problem for Apple, resulting in it seeing a decline in its market share in the world’s largest smartphone market.
