Apple now promises to invest $100 million in Indonesia to get rid of iPhone 16 ban | Infinium-tech
Last month the iPhone 16 series was banned in Indonesia after Apple first committed to investing IDR 1.71 trillion (about $107 million) in local R&D facilities in the country and then did not meet that commitment.
Earlier this month, Apple pledged to invest about $10 million in a new factory in Indonesia to avoid the ban, and today the company has increased that planned investment tenfold to $100 million — which coincidentally is very close to that amount. Should have invested in the beginning and didn’t.
$100 million will be invested in Indonesia over two years, according to people familiar with the matter (which has not yet been announced publicly).
The first pledged $10 million was to go to a factory making accessories and components in the city of Bandung. It’s unclear where the other $90 million now offered will end up, but Apple certainly has plenty of options, including asking its manufacturing partner Foxconn to set up assembly lines in Indonesia.
